Trauma Therapy in Kansas City, Online Sessions Across Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona
Something happened. Maybe it was a single event that changed everything — a loss, an accident, something you witnessed or survived. Maybe it was years of smaller things that added up until your nervous system stopped feeling safe. Either way, you know the weight of it. You carry it into rooms, into relationships, into the middle of ordinary days when it shouldn't even be there.
Trauma therapy is how you put it down.
I'm Sara Wilper, a licensed clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience working with trauma, grief and loss, and complex family wounds. I offer trauma therapy online to adults across Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona.
What trauma therapy actually addresses
People come to me carrying a lot of different things. Some have a clear event they know shaped them. Others just know something is off; that they react too strongly, shut down too fast, or can't stop replaying something they'd rather forget.
Trauma therapy helps with:
Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
Hypervigilance. Always scanning for the next threat
Emotional numbness or feeling cut off from yourself
Difficulty trusting others or letting people in
Shame, self-blame, or a persistent sense that something is wrong with you
Grief that feels stuck or complicated. Especially after traumatic loss
C-PTSD from childhood trauma, prolonged abuse, or family dysfunction
If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place.

How I work
Trauma therapy isn't one thing. It's a process that we shape together based on what you've been through and how your nervous system responds.
The approach I use most often is EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's one of the most researched trauma treatments available, and it works differently than talk therapy. Instead of just talking about what happened, EMDR helps your brain actually reprocess stuck memories, so they stop having the same grip on your present.
I also draw on somatic awareness, meaning we pay attention to what's happening in your body, not just your thoughts. Trauma lives in the nervous system. Healing involves the body too.
Some people come in knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others aren't sure where to start. Both are fine. We figure it out together.
A note on online therapy for trauma
Some people wonder whether trauma therapy works online. In my experience, it often works better. You're in your own space, on your terms. There's no parking lot, no waiting room, no commute home after a hard session. For a lot of people, that safety and privacy makes it easier to go deeper.
I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions to adults across Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona.
Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy
How long does trauma therapy take?
It depends on what you're working through. Some people notice real shifts in 8–12 sessions. Complex or layered trauma — especially from childhood — often takes longer. I don't rush it. Healing has its own timeline.
Is EMDR the only approach you use?
No. EMDR is my primary tool for trauma, but I also draw on somatic work, attachment-based therapy, and trauma-informed CBT depending on what fits you best.
Can I work with you if I'm not in Kansas City?
Yes. I'm licensed in Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona, so I can see clients anywhere in those states via secure online sessions.
Do I need a diagnosis to work with you?
No. I'm self-pay only, which means there's no insurance company requiring a diagnosis before we can work together. We focus on what you need, not what fits a billing code
